Originating as Streetlight Theater in Ann Arbor around 1983, Oobleck moved to Chicago in '88, and has performing over 20 full-length productions since then. Notably, they have no managing director, artistic director, technical director, music director, or production directors -- they say "Putting the burden of innovation on the director is like putting the prime minister in charge of the revolution..."
Critics agree. Of The Hunchback Variations, The Chicago Reader (which chose it as a critic's choice) says: "[The] piece begins as a postmodern parody of academic conferences and ends as a moving meditation on collaboration and the creative process."
New City's Kate Zambreno says it "...leaves the audience shaking with tears of laughter...ingenious..."
They're committed to original, cheap theater, tickets usually range from $4-10, more if you've got it, free if you're broke. For information, reservations, and interviews, call (773) 347-1041.
