| Award winning producer/cinematographer of Hoop Dreams (1994) executive produced by Kartemquin Films, an independent Chicago-based documentary group. Many film critics and moviegoers were aghast when Hoop Dreams failed to garner an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. Explanations arose that Academy Members split their votes, nominating the project for Best Picture rather than Best Documentary, thus weakening its contention in both categories. However, the word on the streets suggest that The Academy intentionally shafted the Documentary because its original capture medium was video -- not film. Sounds petty and pretentious, but hey. . . so are the Oscars. But not to worry, Gilbert's got friends in high places. Since the documentary's release, Gilbert has secured a five picture deal with friend and local theatre producer, Jim Stern, whose production credits include Stomp and Anna Deare Smith's Twilight. Stern is also rumored to be co-owner of the Chicago Bulls franchise. Point being. . . Gilbert's got wealthy friends, so Oscar or no Oscar -- we'll be seeing more from the Hoop Dreams team.
