Chosen "The Best Off-Loop Theatre in Chicago" by New City's 1997 Reader's Poll, this Evanston professional theatre company established in 1981 has been the recipient of more than 30 Joseph Jefferson Awards and Citations. Their debut -- a production of Nigel Williams' Class Enemy -- won 4 Jeffs all by itself. During their 1998/9 season, their whole calendar (Are You Now or Have You ever Been...?, The Adventures of Herculina, Between East and West, My Three Angels, and H.G. Wells -- Scientific Romances were Jeff nominated. "A company that loves to live life on the edge," says The Chicago Tribune's Richard Christiansen. "Poetry and audacity are the hallmarks of this regime," says Chicago Sun-Times critic Hedy Weiss agreess.
Calling Next the "Site of many of the North Shore's most innovative theatrical productions," The Pioneer Press' Virginia Gerst agrees, saying that "From bare-bone productions of Shakespeare to works of horror meister Clive Barker, The Next Theatre Co. thrives on the unconventional."
