No less than 27 talented, hungry and (mostly) female players light up the stage in Ferber and Kaufman's "love letter to the theatre." Critics say this 1930s chestnut, about a boarding house full of actresses bound together by dedication to their art and cheap rent, is old-fashioned but not corny. It may be set in pre-war New York, but the passion and the poverty are 100 percent Chicago right now.
