In 2010, director Sean Graney did the unthinkable: he made Gilbert and Sullivan cool. His loose, hipsterish promenade staging of "The Pirate of Penzance" became a stealth holiday hit, allowing delighted audiences to spend some of their Chicago Decembers in the Chopin's basement beach, listening to operetta played on ukeleles. This Christmas, Graney turns his attention to another piece of blissfully dorky Victorian pop culture from the Savoy. His version of "The Mikado," playing in rep with "Pirates," is a giddy circus-themed party for adults, complete with colorful drinks, catchy tunes and hilariously unfolding romantic drama.
