Annie Baker's gentle, enthralling play, about a high-school coffee-house worker who stumbles into the orbit of two marginal, philosophical slackers, is short on incident but brimming with emotion. Red Orchid, famous for producing intense, often violent shows in an almost uncomfortably small space, is not an obvious choice for the play's Chicago premiere. But critics say that the intimate space and the fearlessly quiet acting of Shade Murray's cast allow this delicate drama to bloom.
