Ah, spring is here at last. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and a young man's thoughts turn to....theater, naturally. Here are some new deals from the League of Chicago Theaters to help you get out and celebrate Chicago's unthawing on Thursday nights.
April 6: The Oresteia presented by Greasy Joan & Company at the Storefront Theatre
Greasy Joan & Co. present the tragic tale of the house of Atreus in this contemporary staging of the three-play cycle by Aeschylus. When the Greek hero Agamemnon returns home from the Trojan war, his wife, Clytemnestra, and her lover plot his murder. That's just the beginning of the family's cycle of violence. Theater Thursday patrons can join the artists for a 6 p.m. pre-show reception with drinks and hors d'oeuvres at Barro's Mexican Cuisine. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $25; call (312) 742-8497 and mention Theater Thursdays.
April 13: The Violet Hour presented by Uma Productions at the Chopin Theatre
In this play presented by Uma Productions, a fledgling book publisher must decide which book to publish first: a mammoth tome written by his best friend, or his lover's autobiography. To start this Theater Thursday event, join the director and scenic designer for a reception and discussion about how they've tranformed the theater space for the show. Drinks and snacks are provided by Mas, and everyone is invited to a post-show opening celebration at Adobo Grill (Wicker Park) that includes food and drink. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $20; call (773) 347-1375 and mention Theater Thursdays.
April 20: Cradle of Man at Victory Gardens Theater
"Cradle of Man" is a new dramatic comedy set in Africa, where two American couples encounter each other and expose existential crises. At 6 p.m. before the show, enjoy cosmos (as well as other Hot Dish drinks and appetizers) and some conversation with well-known star David Eigenberg (of "Sex and the City" fame for playing Miranda's boyfriend Steve). Later, the play's director Sandy Shinner will lead a question and answer session with Eigenberg. The show itself starts at 8 p.m.; tickets are $35; call (773) 871-3000 and mention Theater Thursdays.
April 27: Back of the Throat presented by Silk Road Theatre Project at the Chicago Temple.
When two G-men visit an Khalid, an Arab-American, their "friendly" inquiry quickly becomes a more chilling investigation into the man's presumed terrorist ties. Precede this surreal comedy with hors d'oeuvres at 6 p.m.; after the show, there will be a discussion with the Artistic Director and the cast. The play stats at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $20; to purchase tickets, visit www.srtp.org and click on "Buy Tickets Now." Use coupon code #THU-005.
