Editorial Review of Ta Tong

For those nights when you can't decide between a Thai feast or fresh sushi, head over to Ta Tong, where you can have your pad Thai with a side of sashimi.

Pale orange walls, mosaic-tile tabletops and simple wooden chairs accent the simple space, and a sushi bar sits in the far corner of the room, across from the cash register. The only art on the walls comes in the form of a framed jester's portrait made out of mosaic tile and a 3-D gold cat with a waving arm, a traditional Asian symbol of luck and prosperity. With only ten tables for two and four seats at the sushi bar, space is tight, but you can carryout or have your food delivered if the tables are full.

Thai spring rolls, pot stickers or vegetarian egg rolls make good appetizer options, as well as miso soup, seaweed salad or the Ta Tong platter (egg rolls, crab rangoons, pot stickers and crispy prawns). Among the entrees, try the pad Thai, the gang dang (a vegetarian red curry with coconut milk, bell peppers, bamboo shoots and basil leaves) or the po tak, (seafood mixed with noodles, cabbage, ginger, carrots and basil leaves in a special sauce). The Japanese portion of the menu offers a variety of sushi, with favorites like maguro (tuna), smoked salmon, unagi (eel) and a garden maki with avocado and asparagus. Highlights include the Crazy maki with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, jalapeno covered in masago or the Green Turtle maki with unagi, cream cheese, tempura crumbs, cooked shrimp and wasabi mayo, and go for a reasonable $2.50-$7.95 per piece. Teriyaki chicken, salmon or beef entrees with miso soup, salad and rice are also available ($9.95-13.95).
