There's no lack of
taquerias in Chicago, and even the just OK ones are pretty great compared to most anywhere else you can live in the U.S. How did we manage to get so lucky? There really are so few neighborhoods in this city where one can't find an amazing selection of cheap and delicious food.
Perhaps it's best to just appreciate what we have. Luckily, places like Portales make this so easy. The shop itself isn't much to look at, but since when has that ever mattered in a taqueria? The tables are lined with plastic sheets, but let's not begrudge their desire to quickly and efficiently clean our delicious, tasty messes.
There's a small seating area here, and it's BYOB, so that theoretical mess mentioned above? It might be your Corona spilling. The menu here is extremely wallet and veggie friendly, and Portales knows what's up: Some of their items are even advertised as vegan.
Portales will get you fed and happy for less than $10 every time. A taco plate with two tacos, rice and beans and some chips runs about $6. The chilaquiles can bring you back to life on those mornings after, and go for $7. Other small platters are similarly priced.
Average cost: <$10
