Sushi 28 Cafe is a jewel in the sea of Lakeview sushi houses. With more than 10 sushi offerings falling within a one-mile radius (no exaggeration), Sushi 28 Cafe stands a little taller thanks to the care the chefs put into the exquisitely presented food. Your eyes can't help but stray behind the counter, where the chefs intensely roll maki with a dedication that results in very, very, very well made sushi.
Fortunately, you don't need to empty your wallet for such perfection. The BYOB restaurant replaces showy decor with a simple dining room and genuinely charming service. The best deals are the filling $10-$14 teriyaki combination plates, which come with a six-piece California roll, three pieces of nigiri, salad, rice and miso soup, in addition (yes, addition!) to your choice of chicken, salmon, beef, sea bass or tofu teriyaki.
The large sushi selection ranges from $2 sashimi to the $28 for the Sushi For Two (a 28-piece behemoth that includes three rolls and 10 pieces of nigiri), beyond which the menu delightfully includes steamed baos, bubble teas and vermicelli noodles. Knock her socks off date? Probably not, but this is a great choice for a low-key dinner with friends. Delivery available.
Average cost: $21-$30
