Like $4 coffee and bottled water before it, nonfat frozen yogurt is the latest food and drink trend to convince Americans they need on a daily basis what they’ve lived without for years. If you've been avoiding the fro-yo craze, it's time to surrender and head to Red Mango in Lakeview. After all, at this point, resistance is futile.
First-time visitors at the stylish South Korean chain may want to play it safe with a cup of the original tangy yogurt and maybe some berries if you're feeling adventurous. But after that inaugural cup, the four flavors and 16 toppings will make experimenting with combinations (green tea yogurt with mango and dark chocolate, perhaps?) an irresistible lure – not to mention excuse – to keep coming back.
Once you've established your familiarity with the menu, try the smoothie option, which allows you to blend any yogurt flavor with any three toppings. Before you know it, you'll be ordering your tangomonium smoothie with banana, pineapple and coconut with the same ease that you dictate "iced double tall skinny vanilla latte."
Perhaps the best thing about Red Mango is that it's guilt-free. The authentic frozen yogurt is nonfat and contains nutritious calcium, protein and live and active cultures that promote healthy digestion. So go ahead, get hooked.
