Somewhere over the rainbow, a funky, upbeat pizza joint fell from the sky, and landed in Boystown, squashing preconceived notions of what a pizzeria could be. Pie Hole's originality breathes new life into the commonplace slice.
Set back in a tall brick building with large windows and exposed indoor piping, the eatery conveys a very urban vibe. Staff and diners move about the modestly-sized space, joking around and laughing, with someone always having something sarcastic or smart-alecky to say.
"It's just a very irreverent, gay-oriented kinda place," owner Doug Brandt says. He opened the spot in February 2007, and soon after it became the area's favorite pizza destination. In addition to offering a bevy of pies full of fresh toppings, Pie Hole serves enormous made-to-order slices. So whether you're in the mood for something simple like classic pepperoni or crave more exotic flavors—say goat cheese, artichokes and giardiniera—the kitchen can accommodate. Be sure to check out the specialty pizzas, too, if just to laugh at their clever names. The Bad Date, for instance, comes with ranch dressing, extra red and caramelized onions, anchovies, blue cheese crumbles and, of course, lots of garlic to chase away any worries of a good night kiss if you’re not diggin' your dinner companion. Pie Hole also cooks up its own desserts (including delicious cinnamon rolls and tiramisu), salads and breadsticks and sells beer and wine.
If you're really looking for a pizza party, stop in on a Friday or Saturday night, when the gang sings, dances and bakes beautiful scrumptious pies into the wee hours of morning.
