Editorial Review of Nablus Sweets

Hear the word Nablus and you likely associate it with some undiscovered celestial body. Maybe you envision a planet with a chocolate-cookie crust, mountains of whipped cream, oceans of strawberry syrup and endless fields of bananas. No spaceship needed, step off the Kedzie Brown Line and you're there – sort of. Despite its otherworldly name, Nablus Sweets references a city in Palestine famed for its sugary sweet kunafahs and this storefront's staple.

Kunafah, according to owner Nick Falah, is a pastry comprised of orange-dyed shredded phyllo–mimicking shredded wheat, stuffed with cheese and topped with pistachios. Folks drive in from an hour away snapping up trays of them for parties back home ($20-$80). One satisfied guest from Los Angeles even sent a letter that sits beside checkout pronouncing her love of the shop's sweets.

While out-of-towners clearly show appreciation for the brand, other visitors include many of the neighborhood's Mexican families in for anything from cakes and smoothies to sundaes and splits dressed with fruits, syrups and crunchy toppings, $3.99-$5.99. And Falah doesn't forget former governor Rod Blagojevich, who popped in one day. However, most business centers on middle-aged and elder Middle Easterners with a fondness for traditional treats.

Late evenings during Ramadan fill. Otherwise, business is generally mild, perfect for anyone looking for a quiet homework hotspot (no wi-fi available) in an environment that keeps the flavored-iced coffee coming in flavors like brownie fudge and cookie crumb. For anyone in the South suburbs, visit Nablus' sister business of the same name in Bridgeview.

Average cost: <$10
