This honky-tonk, boisterous Evanston favorite is short on the frills but bountiful when it comes to deliciously Southern dishes. Bursting with families and small groups crowded around the casual wooden tables, the average-sized space is comfortably cluttered with Southern memorabilia. Expect appetizers like fried catfish, creamed spinach and rib smackers, priced between $5-$7, and a number of tasty takes on traditional wings, from Jamaican jerk to buffalo (10 pcs./$8.99).

As for entrees, head no further than the menu’s Pit Barbeque, where you’ll find all shapes and sizes of beef, pork and chicken, slow-smoked with green hickory. They tend to cost around $13, but if you spring for those meaty baby back ribs, a full slab’ll cost you $21.99. However, if you feel up for the challenge, we suggest The Intimidator ($29.99), a legendary 32-ounce ribeye with your choice of topping or sauce. Burgers and sandwiches keep the cost around $11 and under, and seafood and steak dishes average $12-$24.

Sidle up to the bar to complement your Southern feast with bourbon, Merle's claim to fame. The selection features ten of "America’s best," from staples like Jim Beam to harder-to-find brands like Bulleit and Basil Hayden's. Or opt for a cocktail. The impressive array of pours includes a classic mint julep and a margarita they're particularly proud of.
