Healthy Tex-Mex might sound like a dream, but it's no secret that healthy usually means less flavor—Mamacita's is no exception to the rule. The restaurant's "authentic" lard-free fare might be great for your figure, but it probably won't do much for your taste buds. On the other hand, you'll be able to have your flan and eat it, too. The dining area is festive with tiled walls, earthy textiles and potted plants. You might even find your feet tapping in rhythm to contemporary Spanish tunes. Wooden benches double as loveseats for cutesy customers sharing entrees and although the space is small, Mamacita's staffers will go out of their way to make room for large groups.
Start with an appetizer and skip the drippy salsa—it might be free, but you'd be better off with a jar of Pace. Instead, save the chips for some homemade guacamole. This fresh dip is also great for jazzing up Mamacita's veggie tacos. Rather than using fake meat or an overdose of refried beans in these flour (or corn) tortillas, the restaurant stuffs them with something like a garden salad. If you'd rather keep your greens in a bowl, try a steak enchilada or a Mexican pizza. What these crispy cracker-like pies lack in size, they make up for in cheese and meat. Pair it all with your favorite bottle of wine; the restaurant doesn't have a corkage fee and the friendly staff will keep your beverages in a cooler upon request.
