Editorial Review of Lovely: A Bake Shop

Lovely: A Bake Shop
photo: Libby Ramer
It's hard to resist the allure. With a crafty edge and a feminine, Southern kitchen setting, Lovely: A Bake Shop proves that the right mix of capability and charm can take the cake.

Tidying up a bland strip of Milwaukee, the shop is careful not to infringe on neighbors; a small street sign tactfully suggests specials, like pumpkin spice cupcakes and sweet potato pie, in pastel colored-chalk, while writers and messengers head through the glass door. Co-owner Brooke Daily's past life as a bookbinder plays out in the bake shop's retro decor and embellished baked goods, while her Georgia roots are invoked with its rich offerings. Lovely's menu channels the low-country elegance of historic Savannah, with items like iced pink cupcakes, homemade blueberry jam and various iced teas.

Inside, rootsy classic rock like C.C.R. sets a comfortable ambiance, and maternal touches, like handmade tags urging, "Please leave your dirty dishes, we'll clean 'em!" verify that the hospitality is genuine. The back corner stocks local goods for sale, like ceramic teapots, sugar caddies and colorful aprons from grassroots craft emporium Etsy. Schoolhouse-style coat hooks, retro photographs and wooden rocking chairs complete the picture of '50s country living, while free wi-fi reminds patrons that city life has its benefits.

The scene-stealers, Lovely's glass-encased baked goods, sit upon a vintage wooden bar; the surrounding stools, covered in old-fashioned, floral oil cloth, will surely support many a delicious decision. We suggest the apple almond cobblerette or the house specialty Madeleine cookies and a cup of Intelligentsia coffee. Served steaming from thick mugs, it costs under $2 and comes with free refills. Though it almost goes without saying, the staff will hook you up with a to-go cup for the walk home.
