NOW CLOSED...Formerly: Kevin will close on March 1, 2008.
Joining the ranks of other one-name wonders like Madonna and Cher, Kevin Shikami's restaurant is simply called Kevin. While the name is straightforward, the cuisine is less clear-cut. Owner and chef Shikami is known to display his own diva-like behavior in the kitchen. The menu, which is generally classified as French fare with an Asian twist, changes daily in order to accommodate Shikami's particular whim.
While the menu isn't set in stone, one constant is the wildly popular appetizer tartare of tuna with wasabi, soy, pickled vegetables and seaweed salad. Other pre-entree options may include spicy soy glazed quail on Korean pancake and seared ostrich on cranberry coulis. If you're stopping by for lunch, have the sauteed breast of duck salad in orange vinaigrette or the crab cakes on a red potato salad; the rest of your day will be all the better for it. Dishes on the dinner menu range from items like a grilled asparagus salad, spicy, bean-glazed rack of lamb in rosemary jus and pine nut-crusted red grouper. Save room and have the white chocolate raspberry mousse charlotte for dessert. While the average lunch entree costs $17, dinner is steeper, costing around $32.
The Asian influence isn't limited to the food; the restaurant is dressed up more like a modern Asian restaurant than a traditional French bistro. Instead of bright colors and framed art, neutral colors dominate, and carvings of plants are etched into the walls. The loft-style space, with a high ceiling and wood floor, has a natural, soothing feel that lets you relax and focus on the restaurant's true diva—the food.
