THIS RESTAURANT HAS CLOSED, POSSIBLY FOR GOOD.
Quaint, quiet and quality, Katachi keeps the decor simple and delivers the maki fresh. Located one-half block south of the Sheridan L stop, this off-the-beaten path sushi joint serves up more than 35 different maki selections, a dozen or so hot appetizers, and a variety of donburi, rice dishes that sway from the tekka don norm via the Katachi curry rice, a Japanese-style curry with potatoes, carrots, onion and your choice of chicken or beef.
Lovers of their hometown will appreciate the Chicago-inspired maki; varieties include the Cubs maki (shrimp tempura, deep-fried pepper, avocado and spicy cause) and the Windy City maki (eel, egg, avocado and cucumber). Choose from a handful of seats on the right side of the room or, if you're lucky, grab the lone booth on the left. For a decent value, order up sushi a la carte for $1.75-$3.25. BYOB.
Average cost: $10-$20
