If the last time you went out for lunch you ended up staring at the menu for a good 15 minutes (leaving only 15 minutes to order, pay and scarf your deconstructed tofu etouffee with cranberry aioli down), then maybe you should try a no-brainer like Harry's Sandwich Shop. This laid-back, pared down shrine to meat, cheese and bread will restore confidence to indecisive diners as they order, "turkey, swiss, wheat!" without a moment's deliberation.
Indeed, the most complicated thing you'll do at Harry's is walk around the corner to the Van Buren entrance when you realize you can't use the door on Dearborn. Located in the historic Manodnock Building, the joint features a charming storefront setting with marble ceilings and intricate ironwork. The service is friendly and rapid, but sometimes a little hard to understand, so you may have to double check to make sure they got your side of coleslaw.
In addition to relieving you from a lunchtime brain buster, Harry's offers low prices and free pickles. Sandwiches can be ordered junior, regular or super as well as hot or cold, all for less than $10. The ingredients are standard, nothing to write home about, but considering your order will involve less verbiage than your cup of joe at Starbuck's (I'm a tall double nonfat latte with two Splenda), you're sure to come back for more.
Average cost: <$10
