The first location of what is designed to be a small, North Side chain, Gyood! specializes in low-fat, cholesterol-free and lactose-free soft serve. A nutritional chart comparing its vanilla soft serve to Dairy Queen and Cold Stone Creamery hangs prominently next to the counter, showing that there is much less fat, sugar and fewer calories per serving than at its competitors.
But if you're like me, that calorie savings just means you can go nuts with the toppings, which include cookie dough, Snickers, brownie pieces, Reese's, Oreos and plenty of your other favorite junk foods. Any combination can be served in a cup or cone, on a sundae or as a Gyoodee!, the store's version of a Blizzard or McFlurry. Additional options include floats, shakes, cows, ice cream sandwiches and brownie sundaes. Most offerings will run you $3 for a small or $5 for a large. Vanilla and chocolate are always available, with seasonal flavors like pumpkin introduced throughout the year.
In an effort to create a unique identity, Gyood! offers a variety of unexpected features as well. For one, flat-screen TVs more commonly found in bars play sports throughout the 40-seat space. The shop also delivers to addresses between Irving Park, Western, Armitage and the lake. And it even has ice cream for your dog, although he'll have to stay outside to eat it.
As for the name, it's pronounced “good,” but spelled the way this word sounds with a mouth full of soft serve.
