NOW CLOSED...Formerly: The Grotto on State has a creepy but soignee feel; think Norma Desmond's mansion from Sunset Boulevard. Eerie monkeys appear pretty much everywhere in the dim restaurant. Just try to find a painting, surface or even a lamp that doesn't have a grinning, simian creature squatting on it. They rest in an ornate jungle of red beaded lamps (for a little splash of bordello in the Grotto), leather banquettes and garden-green walls with leafy ornaments splashed across them.
The entrance to Grotto leads to the restaurant's Mahogany Lounge, which overlooks the Newberry Plaza Atrium. Stop for a cocktail (a full bar complements its liquor with an extensive wine list and selection of champagne) and check out the view, which includes a three-story waterfall.
Chef Abraham Aguirre focuses his menu on fresh ingredients and mostly Italian fare. Menu standouts include the chicken Vesuvio simmered in garlic, olive oil, white wine and special seasonings. For a meatier dish, go for the Cowboy, a rib-eye on the bone with garlic mashed potatoes, wild mushrooms and bordelaise. Sides like the creamed spinach and asparagus with balsamic glaze are on hand to round out your entree. Sweeten the deal with a gelato or key lime pie. While pastas average $15.95, expect to pay $22.95-$36.95 if you're in the mood for steak, veal or seafood.
