Chicago has long had to suffer the crowing of New Yorkers about their food trucks and the fantastic variety of dining options available to them. Thanks to the efforts of the Gaztro-Wagon, we won’t have to point to pizza trucks outside 4 a.m. bars as our only alternative. The tiny storefront on the northern edge of Chicago will soon be known as home base for the Gaztro-Wagon itself.
The anchor of the menu is the naan-wich, a wrap of naan (cooked to a comfortable cross between crispy and chewy) cradling a bevy of different ingredients. The wild boar belly with fennel, olives, yogurt, and shaved red onions is a very classy (and less greasy) kind of gyro. Veggies can get sinful with the portobello, arugula and goat cheese naan-wich or the baby greens, feta, pecans, piquillo pepper and citrus vinaigrette (both $7).
If you want to go all out, a New England lobster roll is available for $12. All of the sandwiches come with fried plantain chips, sea salted and accompanied by a tub of minty garnish that should knock your taste buds clean before heading back into the naan-wich. If you’re looking for something lighter, though, they also serve a mean watermelon gazpacho for $5.
Drinks include Goose Island Root Beer, Red Bull, Fiji water and Jarritos for the sweet toothed. Desserts from Frtiz Pastry include delights like a Macaron Mixta (a mix of macaroons) and oatmeal crème pies (all desserts are $4). The restaurant is also talking up their Black Dog Gelato treats.
