With more people moving to the southwest side of town, it was only a matter of time before dining options — particularly in Pilsen — expanded beyond carnitas joints, hot dog stands and the ubiquitous presence of Nuevo Leon.
Italian cuisine is about as accessible, sometimes as safe, as Mexican. Ciao Amore does its job to provide another option without stepping too far left of center. Chef Cesar Pineda (formerly of Caro Mio in Ravenswood) has created a menu of classic rustic Italian fare in a setting perfect for people looking to steal away a couple of hours for dinner, regardless of the food's quality.
Pineda's menu is teeming with house-made pasta dishes like lobster ravioli, served with a spicy arrabiata sauce that will have you reaching for that bottle of wine you will bring to this BYOB establishment. Ciao Amore also serves up its share of seafood, such as seared mahi-mahi and grilled calamari, although the braciole could use some more tenderizing.
Average cost: $10-$20
