There's just something about Chundy's that makes it stand out from your typical corner sandwich shop. The food may be inexpensive, but from the moment you walk in and smell the bright aroma of basil, you'll immediately know you'll be getting something fresh and of high quality.
The walls of red, olive green and yellow are as bright as its food, while the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. Hanging plates on the olive-green walls add a sense of quirkiness to the place.
Once you've settled in, walk directly to the counter where you'll be greeted with a smile by Chundy, the owner. Freshly made side pastas and potato salads already sit in trays just behind the counter. But high behind counter is the day's menu written on blackboards. Chundy's constantly changes its menu so you may not find the same items on your return. But if you happen to see Da Basil Chicken Salad sandwich ($5.95), it's highly suggested you try it. This sandwich, filled with chopped grilled chicken, basil and almonds with Chundy's secret dressing, is served in a croissant. It comes with a side pasta salad with fresh tomatoes and parsley.
Other menu items for this day included the El BLT ($5.95), served with piles of crisp bacon, fresh lettuce and tomatoes on whole wheat bread along with a number of pastas and pastries (apple tarts and chocolate croissants). Cakes like the spiced apple cake with cream cheese frosting and Black Forest chocolate cake can be ordered ahead of time, because like most everything else, Chundy makes it all from scratch.
