You won't be blown away by the food at this Hilton Suites eatery (it's a chain hotel restaurant, after all), but you will be pleased by the very warm and helpful service. Located just a block east of the Magnificent Mile, Café Med caters to a crowd of hungry tourists, and its staff is aptly courteous and patient. My waiter was all too happy to answer my questions about the restaurant and its parent Bice Group.
If you're looking for a good value, the pizza is your best bet. These eight-slice pies feature an array of toppings like prosciutto, anchovies and pancetta, all for just $12. The pasta dishes are a little lackluster and missing some obvious favorites (no Italian sausage?), but by adding chicken, shrimp or a side of the tender, flavorful meatballs for a few extra dollars, you'll find they can make a satisfying meal in the $20 range. Entrees include a pork chop with cinnamon apple sauce, tuna steak, and veal scaloppini.
In truth, you might be better off heading a few blocks south to the upscale Bice Ristorante or the slightly less expensive Bice Grill on East Ontario Street. Of course, if you're trapped in your hotel room due to a Chicago blizzard, Cafe Med has its charms.
Average cost: $10-$20
