The Bridgeport neighborhood has long had a sizeable population of folks from Lithuanian descent. It's also one of the most Catholic neighborhoods in the city. So when people want to order their kolaczys (pronounced "col-lash-kee") for Easter, or need to fill any other pastry needs, for many of them Bridgeport Bakery is their only option. While Easter is one of its busiest times of year, to be in business for more than forty years, you need to do something right all year long. And this no-nonsense bakery on Archer Avenue can do no wrong.
Its display cases showcase the results of the day's labor. You'll find turnovers, doughnuts, cookies, pies, tarts and cakes, all made from scratch before sunrise. The previously mentioned light-as-air kolazcys burst at the seams with fresh fruit and cheese. A box of two dozen cost less than $10.
For those that take their tarts savory instead of sweet, Bridgeport's bacon buns are legendary. Stuffed with chunks of rich bacon, this bun's a meal in itself or makes a wonderful side to a hearty breakfast. At just .85 cents each, they're priced to fit any budget. If you want to score these or any of the bakery's wares in their freshest state possible, call your order in for next day pick-up. Chances are that when you come in, your buns will be nice and warm as the staff wraps them up.
Average cost: <$10
