Southport feels like small-town Chicago, with a tree-lined-street air that's helped along by Bobtail Soda Fountain, a nostalgic corner ice cream shop featuring glass-bottled Coke and employees who are literally "The nicest soda jerks in town," as their t-shirts declare.
The true stars of the store are the specialty ice cream flavors, at $2.50 for a single scoop and $3.50 for a double. They include the So-Po Champagne, which tastes like a mimosa; the Signature Sunset, a merlot ice cream with dark chocolate chips; and the popular Cubby Crunch, with sprinkles, Oreos, chocolate chips and toffee in vanilla ice cream.
But the store is worth a visit even if you don't plan on getting a cone. With sunlight streaming through the large windows and a bustling counter, it's fun to sit back, sip a $2 coffee and people watch: You'll see moms with toddlers, stylish twenty-somethings, guys from the bar down the street, dudes in leathers from Belmont and grandparents out for an afternoon treat.
And there really is something for everyone. The $3-$5 menu boasts more than five kinds of biscotti, pastries, sodas, sundaes, frozen yogurt (including a mean cappuccino variety), milkshakes and breakfast sandwiches.
