When the words "homemade" and "Italian" are strung together, most people immediately conjure up the tastes of slow-cooked sauces and hand-formed pasta. Those with an enlightened sweet tooth envision a baker's counter brimming with piles of fresh-from-the-oven pastries. Tucked into the streets of the Bridgeport neighborhood, Biscotti's Galore, a tiny, family-owned bakery, does Italian grandmas proud.
Owner Rosa Frado's specialty is a simple one: the cookie. The Sicilian fig delicacy, cucidati, provides a taste of the old world, as do the traditional Italian wedding cookies. To the delight of anyone who has ever had a Nonna, Biscotti's Galore also serves up a delicious take on nut cups. Of course, nothing says "Italian cookie" like a good biscotti, and the folks here do right by their namesake. Heavily laced with almond, the dough is kneaded, rolled out until just right, flattened and baked. Once removed, it is cut into oblong form, and then baked again. The result is perfect biscotti, every time.
The bakeshop, located just a hop away from U.S. Cellular field, offers many catering options. There isn't an office party, family reunion or wedding around that wouldn't benefit from a tray of Rosa's cookies.
