Editorial Review of Bbop

bibimbap at Bbop
Not long ago, Okcha McDonald put away the hot-pink nail polish and closed down her beauty salon. Fortunately for us, McDonald traded in her teasing comb for a chef's hat, and opened a healthy Korean restaurant.

Situated next to Red Line Sheridan stop, this cove of a restaurant mainly operates as a takeout spot for the hustling and bustling commuters. But should you listen to the chalkboard sign outside that beckons travelers to slow down and eat right for change, you'll discover Bbop is the perfect casual hideout. Works by local artists hang on the cheerful yellow walls, and a white cabinet holds an array of brightly packaged Korean snacks. Seating options are limited; the mismatched colorful lawn furniture faces large windows so you can watch the rest of the world hurry on by.

No matter what time of day you go, you'll probably find McDonald behind the counter cooking up a storm in platform heels and mini skirt. Bbop doesn't serve traditional Korean food, but delivers hip, healthy alternatives to that hot dog you would have otherwise chomped down. Take the Bbop mix ($5.75), McDonald's rendition of bibimbap, made with brown rice and loads of veggies. Slivers of fresh carrots intermix with spinach, cucumbers and bean sprouts, all topped off with a single fried egg. Or follow your carnivorous instincts and order the bulogogi ($7), large chunks of pan-fried beef marinated in a garlic and ginger soy sauce served over an enormous portion of brown rice. On weekends, it showcases live music, a complicated fete considering the size of the space. It’s BYO, so bring a few cold ones and forget your spatial reservations.
