The lemony yellow walls of Bananas Foster Cafe are the perfect pick-me-up for any dreary day - or even a not-so-dreary day. This adorable addition to the
Edgewater restaurant lineup is charming, quaint and the kind of place you'd bring your family for lunch, or a college sweetheart for a first date. Which is, says owner John Winslow, exactly what people do.
Winslow opened the cafe after spending a number of years running a B&B in Key West after growing up in England. It's clear he's come to know what people want - a good bargain, hearty and healthy food and a great atmosphere. The menu, he says, is a collection of things he likes to eat. For breakfast there's stuffed french toast, omelets, hotcakes and more, all for under $7. The prize item is the full Irish breakfast ($12), complete with imported bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, sausage, egg, fried bread, tomatoes, home fries, toast and butter.
Lunch is full of delicious options like shepherd's pie, orange-scented steak, fish and chips or steak, mushroom and ale pot pie. Paninis, salads and soups are also mainstays. Dinner turns it up a notch and spans the globe as far as options. Paella, dill salmon, pomegranate pork medallions and Basque sea bass are all dinner-time favorites. Dessert options include berries and cream, fresh apple pie and, of course, bananas foster.
The cafe has a nice selection of table wines to accompany its culinary offerings.
