Annette's is the last place you'd expect to find some of the city's best chicken – located in an Uptown small strip mall between a Subway and a Dunkin' Donuts. Even its blue and red logo of a chicken wearing a top hat looks like a bizarre merger between Colonel Sanders and Chick-fil-A, almost implying this is just another corporate chain offering processed meat. No way this place has anything but nasty meat, right?
Well, think again. Annette's has crazy good chicken. First off, it isn't deep fried like a KFC wing – it's broiled, a pressure cooking process that leaves the chicken less greasy, delightfully crispy and blissfully juicy. The four-piece breast, thigh, leg and wing meal offers all you could ever want - chicken, fries, a roll and coleslaw – for $7.99, as well as a plethora of other combos (you just want one leg? You got it!). The stand offers a few other options for entrees – cod, shrimp, tuna salad sandwich – but you should probably avoid these unless you're allergic to chicken. Extras like broaster potato wedges, cheddar bites and Cajun popcorn chicken add a little variety in the side dish department.
With no dining room, Annette's is strictly a take-out joint. Orders can take a few minutes, so it's best to call ahead before you drop in. If you do find yourself waiting for a few minutes, take heart: there's magazines, Sudoku and crossword puzzles to make your stay more pleasurable. Plus, the smell of broasted chicken rivals the Subway "fresh bread" aroma for "most enchanting smell in all of fast food," so feel free to arrive early, play some Sudoku, and enjoy the scent of broasted bliss.
