    Monday, Jan 26, 2009 at 6:15 p.m.

My boyfriend and I decided to check out Thai Urban Kitchen because we were headed to the Chicago Symphony. I had read the reviews about the establishment so I was prepared for the slow service and determined it was the perfect place to kill time since we were not in a rush.

We arrived there and it took 10 minutes for the waitress to approach us to take our order. When she approached us she said she did not see us sitting there. My boyfriend asks if the host did not mention that he seated us. She replied no.

It was Pad Thai ($8) Monday so we went with the beef Pad Thai and the Chicken Satay ($6). Since we knew the service was going to be slow we instructed the waitress to bring all the food at once followed by the bill. The Beef Pad Thai arrived and it was a small serving when compared to other Thai restaurants (Spoon, My Thai, and Penny’s Noodles). We tried the Beef Pad Thai first which was nothing to write home about. It did not arrive piping hot. It was warm and gave the impression that it was prepared earlier in the day. The Chicken Satay accompanied with a peanut sauce was marvelous. We skipped desert and grabbed a few nibbles and beverages at Argo Tea on the way to the Chicago Symphony.

Overall, it is not worth a second try unless you have lots of time to kill. Furthermore, since Chicago has so many good restaurants you can take a pass on Urban Thai Kitchen and take your Thai food exploration somewhere else.

We stumbled across TUK looking for a quick pre-Opera dinner on Saturday night, and it was perfect. In and out in 45 minutes, curries were fresh and tasty, service attentive (the place was almost empty), and the price certainly was right! Looking at other reviews, I'd say they are now worth a second look.

Went to TUK last week, determined to try their much talked about new Dinner menu. Never had a chance to go when they were only open for Breakfast and Lunch, but I don't know why they have received such grim reviews?

The service was flawless and the staff very friendly on my visit. I was seated fairly quickly and attended to just enough.

I had the Tom Yum soup which was very tasty and the Braised Duck which was so juicy and cooked to perfection. Such an interested mix of flavors in their dishes, both sweet and savory but neither outdoing the other.

I highly recommend giving this place another shot. I'm going back for brunch next week!

I tried Thai Urban Kitchen about a month ago and must say I wasn't impressed. I had the crab fried rice and pot stickers. Very standard fare for a high end price. We are talkin' 13 bucks for lunch here folks. And that's not counting tax. We're set to go here again for a company outing next week. Hope the food is better

Had a 50% off breakfast coupon that expires tomorrow, so I stopped in TUK to get an order to go. Not an employee was in site. Two solo diners and a woman sitting on the couch, talking on her cell phone were the only ones in there. Waited for 3 minutes (thought about going in the kitchen), but just decided to leave and phone in my order (I work across the street). Ten minutes Ilater phoned in an order for Thai Coconut Waffles with a side of ham (it's written waffles in the menu, but you only get ONE waffle) and picked it up in about 15 minutes. The host wasn't that pleasant and almost dropped my order (he caught the bag in mid-air). The waffle was dry and it was just a regular waffle. The brown banana type mash (rum banana "sauce",not) on top was very forgettable. Didn't get any lemongrass syrup, just two containers of maple syrup. Nothing special about the ham. What a disapointment. The server told me to keep the coupon (hoping that I come back tomorrow)? Since it'll only be $3 I might go back tomorrow to see how badly they screw up an omlette.

Had a pleasant dining experience for lunch. Had a good tall glass of Thai Iced Tea. Delicious as expected. Had Calamari Salad. Good and crunchy. I like their Pad Thai. Serving is good enough for 1. Service was not bad at all.

Food was very good and a good value for your money. Price includes an appetizer. Only issue was the service. I ordered a Ginger dish without mushrooms, my companion ordered the same dish as is (with mushrooms). First the wrong dish was sent out for both of us (we received Sesame). Then we got the ginger dish, but my companion did not have the mushrooms. She sent it back for a 3rd time and received a new dish...again without mushrooms. The manager did not do anything except get the dish fixed. No offer to comp or discount the item. Bad service/Good food.

TUK was well worth the wait. Great food, reasonable prices and a breakfast to die for... I know other reviewers may have started out on the wrong foot but give them a second chance. My waffles were perfection and I went back for lunch the following week and had the best Tom Yum soup in the city.
