I apologize for having no information on Charlie's. I do, however, have a crypt full of memories of my brother Peter founding this establishment in 1971 as Yvef Cafe. I, with my other brother Bob, and Pete's wife Randy, helped him to rehab the building; the bar was an afterthought. I remember the day the beer garden slab was poured, and hitting tennis balls against the wall. Judy Roberts played the grand opening. I lived on the 3rd floor, and my roommate and old chum Mark tended bar (he had turned 21). All the other saloon keepers in DePaul told Peter he was too far west to succeed. Those were golden moments in that changing neighborhood, an interregnum, a collision unfolding in slow motion between the post WWII working class bric-a-brac Clybourn and ivyied Lincoln Park.

Small, intimate with great decor. On a Saturday night we arrived after the kitchen was closed but liked the atmosphere so much we went back for the Sunday brunch - great omelettes - much beyond typical "bar food".

We stopped at Charlie's Ale House at the Navy Pier on our recent trip to Chicago. The food was very tasty. I got a steak that was seasoned and cooked just the way I like it. The roasted red potatos were excellent - seasoned nicely with rosemary. The greek salad was good - not too much of any one ingredient. I also got the green bean cassarole, which wasn't as good as home made, but still good. I tried Charlie's Ale for my drink and it was a fine beer. The atmosphere was relaxed and the restaurant was very clean. Overall, a very nice dinner and experience.
