This place has the friendliest waitstaff I have ever seen at a coffee shop. There's been a major turnover in staff here since some of the 2006 reviews. Way better atmosphere today than Cafe Neo.

Frankly, I liked this place before i worked there. We were always out of EVERYTHING, and the boss took months to get me my paycheck. Once they changed the locks without telling me; I had to wait for an hour before the owner showed up to give me a new key. It was February. Such good coffee but such a terribly run business.

We stumbled upon this coffee shop late one Sunday evening after a bad experience down the street at Cold Stone. The gentleman working that night was super; service was fast and friendly, and he even gave my daughter samples of gelato. The restaurant was clean and pleasant and great for people-watching if you sit at the bar.

The only location I've ever visited is their Lincoln Square store and this place sucks. The service is bad, the coffee is inconsistent and the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. I've been in there on more than one occassion where they didn't have large cups. How could you be a coffee house and not have large cups multiple times? Avoid this place, I can't wait until it closes down.

I am a student at UIC and have always liked Cafe Descartes coffee. I live near lincoln square and wanted to try it out. First, I really like the interior - very warm/inviting and great bar! Secondly, I don't know who works there during the week (I read the comments on some less-than-friendly waitstaff) but the person working today was delightful! Very cheerful and friendly! I like their coffee and espresso - not overwhelming but flavorful - and they have gelatto here which I'll try next time.
The negatives: They were playing music from the radio when I was there - kind of detracts from the atmosphere. I would prefer CD's to this. Also, I don't see a separate customer bathroom here - it looks like you can use the employee restroom, though.
Overall, I do like it and would come again.

Love, love, love the Oatmeal Latte's and Gelato Shakes. Both are extremely addictive! I also like the hype of the euro-music that plays to take away the drone of the hum drum day.

The name brought us (a trio of philosophy nerds) to this place last Saturday night. Although it was nearly empty, the waiter more than made up for it with his incredible & thoughtful service--honest recommendations, bringing us waters without being prompted (maybe he saw us wiping our brows?), and not encroaching on our space. The house itself is pretty--we were at a cozy table backed by a mirror--bright & inviting, though seating was limited. The drinks were interesting & subtle forays into gelato and tea as well as coffee, and worth the price.
Definitely a return-able place.

I really wanted to love this place because it's in my neighborhood and Cafe Selmarie, Starbucks and The Grind get busy and not the place for a contemplative cup of coffee. I have been here three times on the weekend, usually Saturday around lunch time. There are usually 2 guys that work there. The older one is grumpy and every time I go in he's complaing loudly that he doesn't have any customers. Hmmm. Although did not bother to chat with me when I tried to strike up a conversation. The younger guy is different every time I go in. I think they get tired of the older guy complaining. Not a relaxing place and the coffee - meh.

I only wish Cafe Descartes lived up to all of the hype. For what it has to offer, the cafe is small, the tables are small and uncomfortable, the drinks are overpriced, and I could really do without the blaring top40 when I'm trying to relax and drink my coffee. If they would've devoted more space for the actual cafe and less space for the sandwich preparation area, then it would've been *much* better. Well, at least the sandwiches are good.
