This place sucks. A steak the size of a quarter in the middle of the plate is not worth the money. Sitting among snobs and sipping overpriced martini is not time well spent.

All of these reviews are very old---I live out of state but have been to Chicago and HC several times over the past year and in fact was there again on a Saturday night about 2 weeks ago. Our group of four had a fabulous meal with great service. I started with a unique champagne cocktail, the Wildflower! Others had beer, etc. We lingered over drinks at the bar with a cheese tray for appetizer. We were seated at a table and each ordered something different so we could pass and taste. Good decision as all was delicious and I would have been disappointed to have missed anything on the table. And of course, we ended with a neat single malt scotch and chocolate sampler for dessert. I travel all around the country and eat in good restaurants everywhere. I recommend this as a special spot with great food, appropriate pricing, and personalized service. And there is valet parking---a bonus in wet weather!

The desserts are really, really tasty, a fact which is effectively cancelled out by the fact that they are really, really overpriced. Even for a special occasion, there are many better options in the city than Hot Chocolate. Recommended if you're made of money, otherwise, pass on by.

I have been to Hot Chocolate four times. I think the desserts are artistically presented, and sometimes quite delicious. On the occasions that I have eaten there, my dining partners and I have tried several desserts at the same sitting and sometimes the desserts look better than they taste, or there are competing flavors that cancel each other out since the flavors are all strong. I have also, however, had great desserts there, and especially love the dark hot chocolate and the salted caramel ice cream (not together).
The food for me, is a different story. I have been disappointed with the entrees, which are often trying very hard to be unique, but lack in flavor and in quantity. I like the idea of comforting food that is a bit on the gourmet side, but have yet to taste an entree there that I think is really unique or delicious. Go for the desserts though- often they are quite scrumptious! Try several different desserts so you can taste the range of Chef Mindy's creations. This is where she really reveals her artistry.

was there on 3/31 for brunch. men's toilet didn't flush. how hard is it to keep up with something like THIS? coffee was awful. put some grinds IN the pot before pressing it perhaps? no reason to return. very noisy as well.

BLEEECCCHHHH. 1:30pm for Saturday brunch. Coffee was weak and ridiculous. Hot chocolate was yummy. Salami omelette was good, biscuit/sausage/scramble was a joke..arrived cold, with the worst cold strings they call potatoes we've ever had.Just tasteless. Biscuit was supposed to have cheddar cheese on it but i found only one small blob. SO many other great places to eat..skip Hot Chocolate. We will.

I went there on a saturday night with my boyfriend, and was quite concerned about seating, since I have heard that it is hard to get a seat...We ended up at the bar rather then an actual table, but that was actually more fun! The bartender was really nice, the chocolate was the most amazing ever! I got the richest hot chocolate they served, and couldn't finish it because it was so filling! It is an AWESOME place, but you need to space it out only because it is so rich! I would totally reccomend going there!(the waiters and waitresses are so cute b/c they are all dressed in brown for the chocolate theme! very stylish!)

so i read about this place in the new rachel ray magazine...thought it would be kool...the atmosphere was nice and eclectic...we ordered the brioche doughnuts were far from great at 10 bucks...also the banana bread pudding which was better than the doughnuts but not great for 10 bucks...drinks were okay for 5 bucks each...we had the medium hot chocolate and the chocolate malt milkshake...would go back maybe for the drinks but that's it...honestly, for all the hype about this place and all the media attention...i dont think it's worth it at all...way too overpriced..bill was 35 bucks..not worth it..

We went for the cheese/chocolate/beer tasting.I had read the reviews but thought with so many courses we would be fine. Although I was not exactly hungry when I left I wasn't close to being full and I guess for $100.oo you expect to be full. The food was fantastic but the burger was literally smaller than a white castle. A little thicker but smaller than the knob on your stove. The beer was a quarter of a small wine glass and 3 were dark. It all matched well and was an experience but the cheese was in things, like soup, you never actually tasted a piece(but once) and the chocolate came out once at desert, in the shot glass all the other reviews talked about. I liked it but the portions were ridiculous and it was expensive.I'm glad I did it but would never go back and couldn't recommend it to any south sider I know

I cannot begin to explain my disappointment by this restaurant. The dishes were uncreative, and everything was terribly overpriced. The breadsticks (3) cost $5 each, and while the butter was good, the green oil sauce was bland and tastless. The sandwiches were mostly bread, while the salads were at least mediocre. The desserts were the selling point, and while my hot chocolate was good, the chocolate II was way overpriced, and the cake wasn't very good. Between the 5 of us, the bill somehow came to $230, with me wondering how I spent $17 on a cup of hot chocolate, a beer, and a single breadstick. If you want to eat at a place with a great profit margin, then by all means, waste your money here.
