As a vegetarian from europe I always include a visit here when in Chicago. I have not found a better veggie place. If anyone can recomend one I will give it a try. Meanwhile I will look forward to my next visit to Karyn's.
The service has always been very good and the food superb. Like most North American veggie places much of the menu is presented as meat substitute items: who needs that? Lets just have good veggie food. Keep up the good work Karyn.

Delicious healthy food! My boyfriend (meat-eater) and I both enjoyed our food. I had the Meatloaf which was served with delectable mushroom gravy. He had the Jerk Tofu sandwich which was spicy and sweet..yum. We finished the meal with some moist Coconut Cake.

The service was terrible and the food only slightly better. Our waiter never even cracked a smile the whole time! He seemed glum and distracted most of the time and didn't give us much service even though the place was mostly empty. Well, maybe he was having a bad day but it seems that everybody I saw working was unhappy aside from the host. I question the conditions they work under and whether the owner gave much thought into who they were hiring. Judging by the food, whoever was cooking seemed ill-qualified in vegan cuisine. The seitan was bland but the sauces excellent. Oh, and the guac never came. We waited for the check but that didn't come either. I went up to the register to pay. They said they wouldn't charge us for the guac but I found out later that they had. I also got the tiramisu cake to go but it was nothing like tiramisu aside from the weak flavor of coffee. Needless to say, there are much better (and cheaper) places for veggie fare. I might give Karyn's a 2nd chance because I am ever optimistic. Perhaps I will dress more upscale the second time around and see if I get better service and improved food. If I do, I will repost.

i think this is, without a doubt, the worst dining experience i have ever endured. my husband and i are both vegetarians and were extremely excited to try karyn's for our fifth wedding anniversary. what a horrible mistake.
AMBIENCEL: we arrived and no one greeted us at the door. there was only one other table of patrons and the rest of the place was deserted. finally, a waitperson seated us... next to the front window that had a huge, drafty crack in it. we moved our seat more toward the center of the restaurant. throughout our meal, we *tried* to enjoy the jazz music playing overhead, but the kitchen was blasting some really loud hispanic/latino music, complete with horns. every time the door swung open, you could hear it even more. i asked the waitress, "sounds like a party in there," and she just looked at me blankly.
FOOD: holy mackerel, was that bad. the salad was pretty much just slivered garlic for days. mmm, romantic. i had some essence of sea-something crepe [see, i'm adverturous] and it was like a piece of cardboard surrounding wallpaper paste and grass clippings. inedible. my husband had those awful little raviolis. nasty. covered with olives, too.
OVERALL: it was so bad that i didn't even want to try dessert. i just wanted to escape as fast as possible. what a bummer.

I hope for those of you with a bad experience at Karyn's you will give them a second chance. I love the vegan pizza, stuffed eggplant, the peanut butter carob snowballs. I always have great service with a smile. They have fabulous food even if you are non-vegan. OH YES the carrot cake should be renamed "to die for cake" it is by far the best dessert I've ever had.

>>Continued from Part 1 BELOW<< The most disappointing part was when it came time for desert. We ordered a piece of Raw Apple Pie with Ice Cream. After a good 15 minutes or so, we were still waiting! I was just about to go to the counter and say "You know, you can just cancel that Apple Pie, we'd just like our check". No skin off my back - They were losing the $10 desert sale. But before I went up our waitress dropped off our check as she walked past. Didn't say anything to us. No "Thank you", etc. When we got the check it was pretty apparent that she completely forgot the apple pie. I was pretty shocked by this. I sent the check up to get change, and while waiting a different check was dropped off at our table with a credit card and they wanted my signature. This wasn't even our bill or credit card! These people were really a mess. We paid and got out of their as fast we could. Like I said, I would never return here, and certainly will warn others of the very disappointing experience I had at Karyn's. I will stick to the Chicago Diner for now.

I went to Karyn's for a Sunday brunch. I was very excited to eat here as I am a vegetarian and have heard many good things. Sadly, I will not be returning as I felt the experience was below sub-par. The atmosphere and decor really wasn't my style, but that certainly isn't a way to judge the food and service. It wasn't even very busy when we sat down. My girlfriend is allergice to Gluten, so we were happy to see Gluten-free items designated on the menu. (Although it said Gluton - ha.) There was one dish she wanted to get that according to the menu WAS Gluten-free. But it did contain Cous-Cous, which we both know is not Gluten-free. When we asked our waitress she was very unsure and eventually checked, but wasn't very eager to please. We were very shocked that a typo like that would occur on a menu at a restaurant of this suposed "caliber". We ordered tea and after a 10 minute wait had to remind our waitress to get it for us. Our food came and the portions were surprisingly small. With the $11 price on these I was expecting a bit larger portion. (I guess I'm just spoiled by Chicago Diner). The food was good, but certainly not amazing. >>Continued in Part 2<<

I am a serious carnivore. However, the food at Karyn's restaurant may change my way of life. The food was good. The presentation was lovely. The environment was pleasant and peaceful. The service was excellent. I tell all my friends to go there.

My future daughter-in-law took me for lunch this past Saturday. I was delighted at the selection of entrees and the food was absolutely delicious! We started out with a cup of the lentil soup served with cornbread. I had the polenta with porcini mushrooms and she had the veggie sandwich. I had to have the peach cobbler and praline tofu ice cream for desert. My mouth waters thinking about it. I'm recommending it to my coworker because his father is a vegan visiting from California. I've been a vegatarian for twenty years but for the past four months turned vegan. I think this restaurant is great! Food, service and decor were all excellent!

I was so impressed with Karyn's Cooked - the staff is ubeat and professional, and the atmosphere is funky and soothing at the same time. I heard the portions were small and ordered appetizers and salads for our table. Either this was a downright lie or the manager increased the portion size. The Jerk Tofu and Steak Sandwich, with potato wedges and slaw was a huge portion! There is a good level of spice in these two entrees. Other interesting bits are the digestive enzymes for post-dining (especially if you are a raw foodie being naughty) and baskets of fried yummies like tofu, zucchini or mushrooms. Despite gorging on the wide array of delights, we did not feel overly stuffed or heavy - the quality is that good. I highly recommend this place and encourage people to bring out of town guests. It's irrelevant that it is a vegan restaurant - it's just a GREAT RESTAURANT!
