The place is classic. When I was at U of C in 1963 two of us came in at noon and started drinking the beer list (50 different beers?) By 7:30 we were pretty wasted and left. I think we reached number 23. Oh yeah, Paul Butterfield dropped in while we were imbibing.

the Jazz at Jimmy's is pretty good. I wish more local joints had Jazz like this.

He who is tired of Jimmy's is tired of life. If by life we mean the kind of dark, grungy, cheap and entirely lovable joint Hyde Park needs more of.

Yeah, it's true, the bartenders don't get too worked up about their customers. Hey, you don't have to dance a jig, but how about a round on the house once every couple of years? I've been in there many, many times and the one older guy still looks at me like he's recovering from a lobotomy, all blank stares. So in a sense, it is like a yuppie bar...crap attitude. What's the upside? TV's bolted so high in the air they might as well be on the ceiling and women so comfortable with themselves they wouldn't THINK of running a brush through their hair. Oh, wait, I said upside. Every once in a while, the drummer who plays WAY too loud on jazz Sundays takes a break to soak his hands in a bucket of ice and the music is tolerable.

Jimmy's now has an ATM. During the day it's a great, quiet drinking man's bar. At night total U of C bedlam.

I love the atmosphere at Jimmys. A classic dive bar if there ever was one. If you're looking for yuppie trendies this isn't the place and am I glad! The Jazz band on Sundays is superb. They should have music more often.
