Jason Busch and Lisa Reisman says: On Sunday 9/12/04 2:05 PM
Michelle Litvin doesn’t just get into her subjects. She exhausts and exhumes their core. When Michelle approaches a subject, she deconstructs and then reconstructs it, painting an exhaustive portrait that captures its essence. Her photography pushes the limits of portraiture, of feeling, of being. One is not moved by her work as much as captured by it. She sucks us into her studies, forcing us to contemplate not just art or photography, but our own emotions and sense of self as we consider our role as observers on the other end of the lens. Whether tackling a series of eyes in black and white digital images, or reconstructing a goldfish pond by capturing a series of still shots and rolling film over a period of time and transferring these images onto paper foldings that dance and swim in an underground oasis within her studio – it all somehow works, trust us – she invites us into her world, a place that is not about art for art’s sake, but about how image reflects on reality – and us. I see the world as a different place after I look at her work.
