The food was 'standard Indian cuisine,' not bad, but nothing meriting raves. The service was simply appalling. Waitpeople hung around chatting in the back while patrons waved their arms, attempting to grab their attention for the basics: water refills, silverware, etc Food arrived haphazardly: one person's entree, then the second person's ten minutes later, then an overlooked appetizer. I rarely say this of a restaurant, but I wouldn't return to Hema's on Clark if the meal were offered as a freebie

I'm Indian and though that doesn't qualify me as an expert, I can tell a thing or two about good food/ambience. Hema's is a dissapointment! The food, which is not bad, is way overpriced. The service and general attitude is where it really suffers... Maybe they go out of the way to make you feel like you're in somebody's kitchen...but there are better ways to do it! Would rather try Indian grill, which is about two blocks south on Clark.

Great menu but poor execution. Hema's Kitchen II has a good selection of different Indian dishes but the actual entrees fail to live up to their names. The cooks use way more oil than needed and they are lacking in taste. I had the worse Murgh (chicken) makhani ever there and the Aloo Matar Paneer wasn't that great either. I feel they are doing a dis-service to many great indian dishes.

I will say the keema samosas were great and at a good price too. The lamb meat was tasty and the samosa had a nice flaky crust. The tandoori chicken was also prepared pretty well - looks like they used some funky food coloring to give it an abnormal red-purple color though - this isn't the normal color you get when marinating the chicken, but the taste is still great.

All in all, I may go back for a few items but I'm still in search of a good takeout place for indian.

This was a huge disappointment considering the build up. It is over priced and the staff was very unfriendly. There was a woman (Hema?) at the counter who spoke on the telephone for the entire hour we were there. This is a very small space and that was bizarre. The staff stood behind my chair and watched us eat, it was a very unpleasant atmosphere and considering the wealth of Indian places in Chicago I can see NO reason to recommend this place.

Terrible, TERRIBLE service and absolutely mediocre food. I took a friend who was visiting Chicago to the location in Lincoln Park and spent most of the meal embarrassed for having ushered her to such a crappy meal. The tandoori chicken appetizer came out cold, the vegetable pakoras were burnt, and on top of that, the hostess/waitress never came by to refill our water or ask if we wanted more bread and/or condiments. Our experience was very similar to mandj's, "We felt like intruders when we walked in and it only got worse from there." We spent most of the meal feeling marooned in a restaurant from which we wanted desperately to depart. Needless to say, I won’t be going back, nor will I ever recommend Hema’s to friends.

Fantastic dishes, good prices and comfy atmosphere. It is not a high end restaurant nor does it try to be. It is not like it's Devon sister but fits in very well with the Lincoln Park crowed. Plan for a 1/2 a bottle of BYOB before you get your first dish...but then again, that's just part of the fun!

I must say the food was great but it's not worth the service unless you are a very patient person. 20 minutes for food, no water refills, we had to FIND someone to give us silverware, and then when we went up to get our check ( another 20 minutes, after watching everyone else get theirs), the waitress was on the phone chatting and give us the look-of-death. Plus, the portion size is a joke for the cost. Good food is NO excuse for bad service.

To begin with those who think Hema's food is awful do not have any clue on exploring cuisine. They have the most authentic taste of how Indian food should taste like.I go there literally everyweek from Childrens Hospital and my friends and I have great meals everytime.

This was the worst food I have ever had. I am from England and have been eating curries since I could chew. My girlfriend and I spent the night throwing up. The chicken was raw and the sauce was greasy. We were sick for two days. We felt like intruders when we walked in and it only got worse from there. When we sent the food back the cooks stared out from the kitchen at us. For a much better experience go to Essence of India on lincoln.
