This is my favorite restaurant. Period. As my wife and I are both excellent cooks, far too often we are disappointed when we go out. But Riques is WONDERFUL! You cna eat cheaply huge burritos , fish tacos, etc, but if you spend just a bit more on the entrees, you are in for a real treat. The chicken and shrimp in the spicy arbol chile sauce is to die for, with the mole, tinga, etc. ec., etc. not far behind. The staff does everything they can to make ou feel welcome and taken care of (in a good way), and the food is super. The fact that Riques is BYOB with no corkage fee just adds to a great experience. I recommend the place 110%

Not your typical Mexican fare, much more diverse and the chicken Tinga was delicious. This is not a taqueria. I like the colorful decor and they have local artist's work on the walls. The service was great, and I also love that it is BYOB. It's a great date place.

This place is absolutely the BEST place date place to go for cheap, authentic, delicious Mexican food. It's small, well-decorated, and insanely good. Whenever given the choice, I always pick this place for special occasions, guests in town, empty refrigerators, or just whenever the craving for their chicken enchiladas hits me.

It's interesting to have read mixed reviews about this place. I had read some reviews but I just needed to check it out for myself being as I always pass by there and it seems so vibrant. Sure enough! I walked in and it was very vibrant, very colorful and nicely lit. I was greeted and seated right away despite the fact that there was a nice little crowd. I was then promptly served my glass of water with lime and chips with black beans (which was a nice touch, not like other Mexican restaurants). The two gentlemen waiters were both very professional and courteous and helped out one another. My waiter, gave a great recommendation, the Carne de Puerco, which he said tasted just like "mom's home-cooking," it sure was! At one point when I went to the restroom, I enjoyed the rest of the artwork hanging on the walls and noticed there's also a back room area which the waiter stated is open for dining and private parties, very nice! Over all, I had a great experience! The food was fresh and delicious, the waiters were very nice and professional, and I would definitely bring a date next time to enjoy the ambiance. Thumbs up!

The food is alright, but the service is terrible. For the second time, they were out of the only vegetarian dish I wanted to order, so I had to get a taco instead. However, they completely screwed up my order (too long to explain). Also, according to the waiter, the veggie selection was suppose to include corn - but there were only 2 kernels on my order. They charged us extra when we asked for more chips and dip, and to top it off, they would not take a credit card because it was below their minimum. They made absolutely no effort to be understanding or accomodating.

The place is brightly decorated, and I liked the way the menu was laid out. That's where the good news ended. I asked if my burrito could be steak and chorizo mixed, no problem we were told. My wife asked if she could have chuhuaha (sp?) cheese on her fish tacos. No problem. My burrito was tiny, but at $4.00 I didn't expect anything large (I don't know what that other reviewer is thinking; this was the size of a mini-burrito at any burrito place). We had a cheese quesadilla for an appetizer. When the bill came we were flabbergasted. My wife guessed it would be $15, and that is about what it was worth; the bill was $28. They had charged me $2.95 to add the steak in! The quesadilla (literally two 6" tortillas with JUST cheese in it) was $5.95. My wife called the manager. Even he was confused how the 5 things we had had (app, 2 fish tacos for her, my burrito, extra for beans and rice, and 2 pops) resulted in 7 things on our bill. The fish tacos were $2.95 EACH but the coup de grace was that they had charged $1.95 for the cheese she had requested. As my wife said, how much would it have been for cheese on just one, 97.5c?? They took some off the bill, but then got shirty and told us they reserved the right to charge what they wanted next time. We told them there would be no next time. Terrible experience. Wouldn't call the fire dept if I saw it ablaze.

This is by far and away my favorite place to eat! Food: Moi caliente` Service **** Price, totally affordable

The location is perfect! It keeps the 'downtown' crowd away while welcomeing everyone.

My boyfriend likes the authenticity of the food and decor.

With all that and Rique's Regional supports local non profits and benfits.

I've seen them help out homeless people too.

My favorite Mexican place on the North Side (try El Taconazo down south ... mmm)! Their horchata kicks and you must try the pollo en mole almendrado.

RIQUES is such a delightful gem in the heart of Uptown. The moment you step inside you're worlds away from the gloom, decrepit buildings, and panhandlers outside. From the welcoming owner to the adorable decor (bright yellow, blue, folk-arty), and INCREDIBLY nice & attentive (without being obnoxious) staff, this was a wonderful experience.

We ordered the House Layered Dip, which was not at all what we expected...more similar to Spanish cuisine than the typical, heavy lard-laced Mexican-American fare. This concoction consisted of tangy salsa fresca, queso blanco, something similar to cottage cheese, fresh guacamole, and tasty beans.

Then I had the ceviche tostadas, which were AMAZING. Fresh, citrusy, with quality chunks of shrimp and i think even some lobster!

My boyfriend raved about his chicken burrito ($4 for a HUGE portion with quality chicken).

And last but not least, I had a Jamaica drink- a sweet tasty punch made from hibiscus flowers!

Best of all is that Riques has VEGETARIAN WEDNESDAYS, consisting of an entirely vegetarian menu every week...to which I will definitely be bringing all my vegetarian friends.

Everything about this restaurant is done with the utmost care and eye for quality--selections are unique, incredibly affordable, and there is even an email list you can sign up for to be notified of the chef's new house specialties.
