I just experienced the worst case of price gouging/ undercover racism over a Michael Jackson cookie at Alliance Bakery. Earlier today Michael Jackson cookies were being sold at Alliance Bakery out of the case for $2.95. Later on today I called to price / time check a special order. Tyler quoted me $2.95 with a two-day notice. I requested for the icing “skin color” of the cookie to be brown instead of white like the original design. Tyler told me this would be done with food coloring not chocolate and the price would remain $2.95. I told Tyler I would call him right back so I could figure out how many cookies to order. I called back less than two minutes later to order two-dozen cookies and was told the cookie was now $3.95. I talked to the owner of Alliance Bakery to share my experience and was yelled at and hung-up on. My question is…Is brown Michael Jackson more delicious than white Michael Jackson? Why did the price increase a dollar for a change in skin color???

We live in Wicker Park and are long time patrons of the Alliance Bakery, but we recently had a bad experience with those amazing looking cakes in the window. Since I was completing graduate school, we decided to order something special for family that would be in town for the celebration. There was an awesome cake in the window that looked like a giant cheeseburger. Inspired, we decided to get one that looked like a deep-dish pizza. When I ordered the cake, it was much more expensive than originally quoted…over $160 for a cake that fed eight. When I picked the cake up, it was the size and dimensions of a regular cake, NOT of a deep-dish pizza, the frosting was pink instead of red like a marinara, with just a few fondant pepperonis and (gray) mushrooms. My expectations had been set by their impressive display window, and even the Alliance baker who heard my complaint agreed that he would also have been disappointed. The only offer made at that point was to add a few more pepperonis and mushrooms. Not only was my entire party very disappointed in the cake’s appearance, the amount of money we spent was far beyond our budget, which made the disappointing product smart all the more. The cake itself was delicious, but the experience was a bad one that left us sad. We wanted to be happy, satisfied customers. We wanted a realistic looking cake like the ones their window display advertises. The Alliance neither delivered nor offered any recompense. We expected much more from them.

We just had a beautiful cake for my son's baptism. Go for the raspberry and buttercream, it is wonderful. And everyone you speak with at the bakery is very nice.

I've always tried to give alliance a chance, their food is pretty good, but not the best. Every cake I've ordered from there has been made incorrectly (wrong color, flavor, etc). But none the less, I feel it's important to support the mom and pop's in this area before the botiques take over. The thing is, everytime I go in there, the service behind the counter leaves a lot to be desired. If I wanted snotty twenty somethings to scowl at me when asking about todays pastries, I'd go to starbucks across the street. The attitude: entitled and pretentious. What happened to good customer service?
