On Daniel Barrow’s Performance Friday, Feb, 20, 2004. The experience of the performance was for those lucky enough to have been there. My interest comes from the experience of the event; the moment I shared with a room full of strangers. At 8PM people were lined up clear down the stairs of the building at 119 Peoria to see Daniel’s performance. Due to spatial issues, not everyone was allowed in for the first performance, nevertheless, the majority of them waited around for the second. Every inch of the room possible had a body in it, all gladly willing to sit in whatever contorted position presumed for the half hour performance. It is my belief that Daniel got this kind of response because people are hungry for a type of Sincerity some of us have never experienced (like the time I tried a strawberry from a farmer in Italy and swore I’d never had a real strawberry before (non-chemically altered); yet I knew having never had one before, if I had, this was truly the sweetness I’d always lacked). Daniel’s work appears to me in layers. To me, what one gets depends on what one is willing or able to see. The less obvious to point out yet most important to me, is the effect the pieces/ performance have on the audience experience. That moment in time; somewhere in Daniel’s reality that might have been... Somewhere in a place that is “a return to a former and nostalgic experience”. -Daniel Barrow [slightly taken out of context from the show catalog] It truly was the sweetness.
