I have been coming here for years and just last night tried the back room for dinner. The Belgian style mussels for two with frites was plenty of food and very tasty. They give you bread to sop up the juice from the mussels as well. The back room is small but cozy and they have a roaring fire going, which is nice on a winter night. We went on a Tuesday and it was packed front and back. The waitstaff in the back weren't so much rude as simply inattentive. We were able to order drinks and food right away, but then left alone for the rest of the night -- which isn't neccesarily a bad thing. A busboy constantly emptied our extra bowl holding mussel shells. On other visits here I have noticed that it can get crowded, and the staff ranges from non-chalant to a bit snobby. C'mon, guys, it's beer, which is supposed to make you happy!

It takes more then a large beer selection to have a great bar. The staff is RUDE. Food is AVERAGE (unless you had a strong beer to cloud you judgement). Its overcrowded with UNCOMFORTABLE chairs, and bathrooms way downstair. This is a perfect place for homely guys to drink a strong exspensive beer, ALONE.

This bar undoubted has the best on-tap beer selection in Chicago (at least as far as I know). However, though I am European and love this kind of beer the staff at the Hopleaf are so rude that it makes the place very difficult to visit and enjoy. Everyone from the door-man, to the waitresses as soon as you enter seem to wish you'd just go home and leave them alone. In a city that usually has great customer service this has got to be one of the worst and unfriendliest places to go out to Chicago. So my advice, sadly, would be to skip out on the good beer selection and have a well-pourn Guinness in a place that won't send you home in a bad mood.

The place is nice and the beer is fantsastic. The bartenders, however, are incredibly snobby and rude. Apparently it's not a place for non-regulars. . . or patrons who don't tolerate such obnoxious waitstaff. . . want a fantastic ber selection with real intellectuals? Try the Pub at the U of C . . . that is, if we'll let you in.

Frankly, I'm still in awe of this place. Unprecedented. I've been a home brewer for almost 10 years, and I lived in the Netherlands on the border of Belgium for two summers. The Hopleaf has everything you could want from a Belgian bar, and some things you could only dream of. They have Lambic on tap, which if you're a beer purist, is a rare event not to miss. They also carry a lot of Flemish (West Belgium) brands, and some from the monasteries that have made Belgium synonymous with excellent quality, hand crafted ales. If you're into the local fare or the $2 Bud special, skip the Hopleaf. If you want real beer, made in a tradition passed down for almost a millennium, then I suggest you take a trip and sample some of their extraordinary collection.

Upon walking into the Hopleaf Tavern, expect the doorman to playfully joke about your baseball cap or jersey, and offer up conversation about the local (and even not-so-local) sports team. During his down time, you’ll notice him sitting on a stool reading what you can only hope is a book written by one of America’s (or Chicago’s) favorite modern or contemporary fictionists.

The Hopleaf specializes in Belgian-style beer, but also has a menu that offers an excellent selection of beer from other countries around the world. Try the Bell’s Amber Ale if you’re looking for something Mid-Western and on the lighter side, or perhaps a Monchshoff Schwarzbier—a German brew—if you’re looking for something darker.

If you’re hungry, the back room of the Hopleaf offers fine dining and is open until 11pm, Sunday through Thursday—Friday and Saturday until midnight (food may also be ordered at the bar).

The upstairs lounge is open to the public during normal business hours, and contains a miniature bar that serves spirits and bottled beer only. The lounge may be reserved for private parties of up to fifty people.

Located at 5148 N. Clark, a quick walk from the Berwyn red line stop or the #22 Clark Street bus, the Hopleaf is an excellent place to gather in the evening with friends or to simply enjoy a good beer on a sunny (or rainy) Chicago afternoon.

Just perfect!!! Great Belgian's beers and food. Will come back for more for sure. Keep that way or better. Thank you!

Lots of great beer, and the mussels for two is delicious. It can get crowded on the weekends.
