"Starting Monday July 6, 2009 take a short quick walk across the bridge to Calypso Café and enjoy some of your Dixie Kitchen favorites: Our fabulous catfish, jambalaya, gumbo, fried green tomatoes and a whole lot more!!! Look for our future message in The Hyde Park Herald that will contain a copy of our new menu."

I, like the last reviewer, am from the South and have been missing some comfort food. We visited on a Friday night, so the place was packed. However, I didn't mind waiting for food that was touted to be the "most authentic cajun cuisine in Chicago." We waited about a half hour and were seated in a cozy table in the back. Our server threw down what I suppose were corn cakes but really just appeared to be burned pancakes. When I asked for cornbread, the server grew angry and retorted, "No! I'd have to charge you for them. Cornbread is NOT free." I was taken aback by her tone but pleasantly replied that I was happy to pay for the cornbread. She then took our order and repeated it incorrectly. When I tried to correct her, she yelled, "NO! I corrected myself when I repeated your order!" I was astounded by her rudeness. The cornbread turned out to be some of the worst I've ever eaten, served stone cold and containing more flour than cornmeal--not the traditionally Southern way to cook cornbread. For dinner, I had the shrimp po' boy with cole slaw and black eyed peas. The shrimp were chewy and smacked of being frozen beforehand. The bread had been microwaved and was so tough that it was inedible. The best part about the meal was the small bowl of black eyed peas, which undoubtedly had come from a can. In short, I've had better and fresher meals from fast food restaurants. I will NOT return to Dixie Kitchen--a place not worthy of including "Dixie" in its name.

When you hail from a town like New Orleans -- finding comparable food anywhere in the world is tough! But Dixie Kitchen is hands down the best New Orleans Creole/Cajun restaurant in Chicago!

Their menu is extensive -- they've got all the basic dishes like red beans & rice, gumbo and jambalaya, fried catfish (fillets and whole fish) right and that's saying a lot coming from a family that's been in South Louisiana for more than 400 years.

I've been to all the other places around Chicago that claim to have authentic Southern Louisiana cuisine and no one beats Dixie Kitchen for consistent authenticity -- they have done their homework and know that real South Louisiana cuisine is not loaded with hot pepper and other spices that make the food unedible.

Those who truly understand this unique cuisine understand the meaning of the word subtle when it comes to adding spice to traditional Louisiana recipes.

I am so glad to have Dixie Kitchen here in Chicago -- whenever I miss New Orleans and don't feel like cooking it myself,I'm headed for Dixie Kitchen and you should be, too.

I love this place also and I am so glad that you also have one near my house in Lansing. It has a special place in my heart because it was my mother's favorite place and I always think of her when I go myself. Fried green tomatoes are great, as well as the Shrimp Po Boy Sandwich.

I just love this place. The peach wings are fantastic and the fried green tomates while drinking a jar of a drink called swamp water ooowee. This cajun southern cuisine is outstanding. I have recently moved away and where I am at we do not have anything like a Dixie Kitchen. I miss the food so much that I have had family members place orders for me and ship them to me overnight deliver. It must be something good if I am going through all this.

Southern, cajun, country cooking in a tiny bustling place, popular and fun. I've enjoyed every visit. They have deep fried oyster po' boy sandwiches, fried green tomatoes, 3 methods of preparing fish (v.low fat grilled, cajun blackened, and deep fied). Friendly, packed with memorablia from the early 20th century, southern, country Americana.

See also my review of Calypso Cafe, their brother restaurant.
