this place is an overpriced mess. the food tasted like it came right out of the freezer. the bread was so old I thought I would chip a tooth chewing it. Yuck, the sangria consisted of sugar and water. Worse yet they had a monday special for sangria posted on their website but did not honor it! Awful and overpriced. When asked to talk with the manager, he was rude and insulting. he was dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, not even sure he was the manager. this is clearly a place that will not last long. it is sloppy service coupled with bad food, save your money and go elsewhere!

I highly recommend this restaurant. We just had our office Holiday party at 1492 last friday (Dec. 5th), and all the event ran smoothly from A to Z. Everybody had a great time. Mr. boss rented a floor for us –company staff, 40 people. We had appetizers plus a 6 course pre-fix dinner. It was plenty of food and everything was delicious. We also had a nice small bar set at the room for us with our own bartender so all drink needs were taken care of beatifully and promptly. For dinner we had “cream of asparagus” as 1st course. Then we had 2 salads: veggies, and pasta. The pasta option was flavorful and yummy. 3rd Course was smoked salmon, marinated grilled veggies, Spanish potato omelet, and the cured ham. Then we had a bunch of hot tapas (4th course). I don’t remember then all, but I do remember the lamb chops, the stuffed mushrooms, and some really good spicy shrimp. 5th course was “Paella” (rice) –we had two options to choose from: the seafood one, and the spicy chicken and Spanish sausages, I picked the spicy one –soo good. For dessert we had 2 options to choose from too, the “soft egg custard” and a cake tiramisu style with some alcohol on it which I don’t remember the exact name but it was good! Drinks? Boy, you name it! We had Sangria, red and white wine, specialty drinks, beer, etc. I would like to add that the staff was very attentive and the service was impeccable. This was my first visit to 1492 Tapas, and I loved it. I will come back.

I love Spanish food -meaning tapas. I have been to tons of Spanish restaurants. Some of them are really good, some are really bad. Well 1492 ranks top notch in my "go back for more" list. What I love about this spot: The venue is cozy and has a warm atmosphere. The staff have always been superb. Their wine list - they only carry wines that rank high on wine connoisseurs magazines. I love their food and bar specials! I try to never miss the 1/2 price bottle of wine Tuesday special. The Tapas!!! yum-yum-yummy! They have a HUGE tapas menu with lots of choices. My favorites are: chicken croquettes -I think theirs are the BEST in town. ALL garlic dishes. The octopus -you can't go wrong with this one. I absolutely love their spicy potatoes. The "Carne a la Bruza" -a mix of beef, chicken, and spanish sausages with potatoes in a tasty sauce! Please try the potato omelet -This is a traditional spanish dish and theirs is -no doubt, the best I've ever had. I highly recommend the goat cheese croquettes -they come over a toasted bread with some kind of balsamic-honey sauce. OK I could go and go naming dishes here. Bottom line: This a place worth trying - you won't regret it.

I went there with my coworkers during a conference trip and we were totally disappointed by this FAKE Spanish restaurant. First, we arrived around 9.30pm; we asked them if it was OK to eat at this hour. The waitress said Ok but after receiving the entree (2minutes after), they asked us to pay without asking if we wanted desserts or coffee. We were in middle of our dinner and they kicked us out. Secondly, the food was awful. Some of tapas were really terrible and the paella was ridiculous. And they call themselves Spanish restaurant. I swear that it is better to go to Chevy’s or Mc Donalds.

After careful consideration of several tapas spots, I decided on The 1492 for dinner last Tuesday. I called ahead for reservations, and I also asked if the Tuesday night bar special was still going on. The gentleman responded yes, and confirmed my reservation. First off, the restaurant has valet parking, which is wonderful considering it's location (very difficult parking street). The outdoor is beautiful, very festive. Our waitress was great, actually way above average as servers go. My date had a peach sangria, and I ordered the traditional, mine was wonderful, according to my date, her’s tasted a little bit watery . The tapas were very good. The bacon wrapped dates were excellent. The mussels came in a delicious marinara sauce, soooo good. The cheese plate was average, but very well presented. For the entree we shared the paella. The rice was cooked perfectly, infused with savory broth. The seafood was not over-cooked,and good quality. When the bill came, I noticed that the half price sangria’s special advertised on the website was not applied, I asked the server about it, explaining that I called in advance and was told that the special was still going strong, and she kindly explained to us that Sangria special is on Monday’s – I checked it out later and she was right- although mistake was mine, the manager came to our table and honor the Monday’s special on a Tuesday!, well in my opinion this is WONDERFUL service. I'll be back!

1492 used to be one of my favorite tapas spots in the city--good atmosphere, good food and they even take reservations! However, in the last year, each of my experiences just keeps getting worse and worse when it comes to service. This last visit the service was beyond horrible. At one point, I just had to get up myself and go to the bar to order more sangria. They brought us our goat cheese dish without bread and we finally were able to track someone down 15 minutes later to get us some. We finally got someone to bring the manager over. I pointed out that we were without water for a half an hour, among other problems, and after he left we still didn't get more water until we tracked down a bus boy ourselves about 10 minutes later. Also, when we mentioned that others at the tables around us were also upset about the service, the manager just shrugged his shoulders and said that they didn't track him down. Needless to say, as much as I keep tring to be optomistic about this place and go back to give it another chance, I have finally realized that it only gets worse, not better. Not worth your time or money! Go to a restaurant where they will appreciate you and take good care of you!

My Goddess Sisters and I are always searching for that perfect, succulent mouthgasm. We have been all over Chicago for this, and up until the time we visited 1492, we had thought we'd found it...a time or two. But Honey, how little we knew. Let's call that youth, shall we? You know how you think you've had a good lover, and then later, as you get older, you experience a truly arrived Lover, and from that point onward, the rest of them are just toys to you? Well, that is how I'd describe the first time I tasted the melted cheese with Spanish sausages and bacon wrapped dates at 1492. My head started spinning, I could barely speak, and soon enough, a laugh attack enveloped me from sheer ecstasy. Seriously. From that moment onward, we couldn't get enough. Then, we wanted to try EVERYthing...and each bite just kept affirming that yes, we had finally arrived at our PERFECT, SUCCULENT MOUTHGASM. But beyond this, the service is excellent. They have put together a team of equally fabulous servers, busboys, and all 'round staff. When I arrive, they greet me by name, make me feel unbelievably at home, and at my birthday celebration there, they did everything short of rolling out the red carpet for me. The night was seamless, truly. Such class. I recommend ANY celebration be held at 1492. It will be an experience you'll never forget. Yes, I am in Love. I have found my favorite dining experience in all of Chicago., and that is saying a lot, believe me...

Best sangria, amazing food and outstanding service! I recently had a birthday party at this restaurant with a pre-arranged menu, etc. and no detail was left out. All of my guests had a wonderful time and absolutely loved the food. Highly recommended!

A huge disappointment! The service was questionable and the food was marginal. The worst part was that someone picked up a dish we weren't through with yet when we weren't paying attention. We brought this to the attention of our server who went to the owner. The owner actually dug the dish out of a dirty dish bin and brought it to our table to show us what was left on the plate. He was rude and the experience was embarassing and uncalled for. I will never be back, I have never experience such insolence from anyone in the restaurant industry.

As a truly Spaniard I don't understand why the critics were so tough with this restaurant. The atmosphere and ambiance are perfect, with the attention to detail brilliantly subtle. Service is lovely, with knowledge wait staff. They really had excellent food and not so pricey for the quality and the area, remember, you’re in Chicago, not in the suburbs. Space is beautifully finished, and very inviting. food is very well balanced, hits all the notes, Seafood Paella, and Pollo Relleno were exquisite, and perfect amount if you want to try multiple dishes.. (people! this is TAPAS place, if you want gigantic american portions, go to your local dinner like Old Country Buffet!. I highly recommend this place as a date spot, sophisticated and classy without being stuffy. Definitely a top spot for a relaxed dinner and drinks with friends.
