Whew! I enjoyed a wonderful evening at this cozy spot that was especially welcoming on a cold Chicago evening. Had calamari that was the best I've ever tasted and a delicious artichoke and asiago cheese pizza. I was lucky to be there the evening of the Johnny Cash Tribute show and discovered a crazy Rockabilly band named Iron Horse. Good food, good entertainment, GREAT PLACE!

Phenomenal acoustics in this tiny 30 or so seat venue. Very intamate atmosphere that will let you get to know the artist playing.. and also gives them a chance to tell their story a la "Music storytellers" style. Last friday we heard a local Chicago Indie rocker Kris Racer and he was simply brilliant! At the very worst seat, you would still be within a short tissue throw. His energy is stunningly complete with the most precision spaztic head shaking, speedy acoustic guitar playing along with his grassroots song writing will sure to make Kris the next big thing to come along. Uncommon Ground did KrisRacer justice in bringing his music to full deliverance!- and they also serve a mean cup o joe!

What a surprise! I had heard great things about Uncommon Ground, but never expected such an extensive food & drink menu. They have a full bar with really interesting martinis & a great selection of wines by the glass. The hot chocolate comes served in a bowl and you can spike it with different liqueures. It is topped with loads of whipped cream and grated mexican chocolate. I had the pumpkin ravioli in a sage butter sauce with blue cheese & toasted hazelnuts that was divine. I also tried a candied ginger infused martini that was fantastic. Uncommon ground has art that changes monthly and because I was there on the first Thursday of the month, I just happened to walk in on the art opening. They don't take a commission on the sale of art so the artists price art more affordably and get to keep all the money! This is a really cool place to take a first date. They have a cozy fireplace in the one dining room and acoustic music in the other. You can get full dinner in either room. In the summer they have a really big sidewalk cafe. The whole place is smoke-free which is great even for a smoker. Last week I took my parents and they loved the place. I'm going back this weekend to try the Montana omelette or the Uncommon huevos. I'm not sure which yet, but if it's anything like the dinner food, it will be great. I'm so glad I found this place. I just found out that they have been open almost 13 years! Wow, how'd I miss it for so long. Robert

This venue has the reputation of being the end-all, be-all coffeehouse in the city, particularly when it comes to their open mic and the singer-songwriter/acoustic/folk scene. I cannot tell you how many people know of this place and recommend it as a good place to play. I took in a few shows and played the open mic to see for myself what all the buzz was about.

First off, let me say that the sound was fine (not that you really need much of a system to fill up a room that small - I was surprised there was a PA at all), the music was quality, and the food and drink were great. The menu is a little chi-chi for a coffeehouse, but it's good stuff. The drinks are excellent, and I'm not talking coffee - there's a full bar and a good tender.

However, the place was crowded and either leaving or arriving was an ordeal unless you got there early and left late. The artists work for tips, so I guess it behooves them to have a packed house...but I'd rather pay a cover and be able to come and go without crawling over sixteen people.

When I went to participate in the open mic, I was not impressed. There was an in-crowd, semi-pretentious vibe that was nto welcoming to new players.

Overall, as a neighborhood coffee shop, it's not bad. As a place to grab a decent dinner and hear some pleasant acoustic music, it's all right. As an open mic venue, it's less than it could be.

Pretty neato coffee shop, but there's not much else in the area. The coffee is served in big bowls instead of cups. They apparently serve food and liquor, but I haven't really partaken.

Saw some live folk music/lilith faire bullshit there. It was kind of a cramped area to begin with, but having some middle aged chick rocking out didn't help the space constraints.

But uh, yeah. If you're in the area, this is your best bet for coffee.
