We went to Topolobampo for my 43rd birthday and it was a wonderful experience. We were seated immediately and offered a small appetizer of guacomole with cucumbers and jicama. We took our time choosing which margaritas to try and our server appeared to take our order. 3 of us each chose a different tasting menu, along with the wine pairing which was right on. Everything on the tasting menu was unique and interesting. Portions were just right for me, but some might consider them on the small side. Rick Bayless was in and graciously allowed us to get a birthday photo with him. We had a great time.

This was one of the worst restaurants I have ever visited. Staff rushed us to order, waitress was the most humorless, unhelpful and rude individual I have ever had the misfortune to come across. One of party was vegetarian, when asked of the chef could make something beyond the one option on the entire menu they had, she sniffily declared 'we prefer not to'. Trying to get some rice with my main was like negotiating to buy a house - 'we might be able to prepare some, but see how you get on with the tortillas first' (they never arrived). When the food arrived it was tepid, bland and anaemic tasting. How on earth this place is still in business beggars belief.

Frontera is awesome in every way. Topolobampo is like it's evil twin! The portions are tiny -basically smaller and more expensive ($35 for an entree half the size of the palm of your hand?!?!) versions of the food at Frontera. Our waiter was very full of himself. When my girlfriend suggested she wanted to get two appetizers instead of one of thier ridiculously priced entrees - the waiter told her she was "missing the point of Topolobampo". I guess "the point" is to disguise regional Mexican food as fine European fare. They miss the mark. The appetizers, salads and deserts were great (and nearly identical to what you can order @ Frontera) but the entrees were sadly lacking. I got the black cod, it was delicious but so tiny - gone in just four bites - I just couldn't understand the $35 price. My girlfriend's entree was inedible. Pork slices in a cabbage "broth".$35 as well. Terrible. Hey Rick, Why don't you just expand Frontera and lose the smug servers?!?!

I was so disappointed with Topolobampo! The concierge at our hotel highly recommended it. We were in disbelief from the moment we arrived. We found the place to be ridiculously full of itself. This is authentic? I have yet to go to Mexico and eat anything remotely close to this. I struggled to find something on the menu that sounded appealing. The Sopa Azteca was good...that's it. We ordered two different dishes and they were frustratingly bad. Seriously, stay away unless you enjoy paying too much for a very bad meal.

Sorry, I have to disagree with the other reviewers. When something becomes too esoteric, the result is nobody wants to tell it like it is because it is "so" unique nobody has the temerity to puncture the balloon. But I am a boor so it doesn't matter. This place is so far and beyond fru-fru that the subtleties avoid me. Sorry, game hen still needs to be more than 2 scrawny wings and a skeleton, and lamb still needs to taste a LITTLE like lamb. Sorry Rick -- way too much is way too much and the prices bear me out. Even the margaritas aren't the same, and when the server has to apologize for slow to snailpaced service and thank us for our patience, something's terribly wrong. Maybe you need to get back into the kitchen or at least into the restaurant and off of tv a little bit more. Or maybe your chips and salsa sales are just too important.

Bravo for being a "non smoking" restaurant - The health ramifications of second hand smoke are staggering - I assume you have no problem with certain people like blacks, whites, jews, japanese, catholic, protestant, short, tall, wide, small, blonde hair, grey hair, no hair...... get my point?
Thanks - we jsut returned from Isa Muheres and can't wait ti try your place - if its smoky we won't go

Topolobampo is the real thing – the finest authentic Mexican cuisine. The Bayless family has created a restaurant that is a no holds barred taste experience. I have sampled many dishes here and could not pick one over another as a favorite – everything I have had was simply amazing.
