I was here Wed, March 18 and got to listen to a new band that blew me away. Their name is The Black Roses. It is a 3 men band. They have their own music so they are not just playing someone else's music. I got to talk to one of the members and found out that they are very young still under age and they already have their own stuff. You can tell that they have many influences from the past in music. Their music is a combination of types from blues to punk. They are the real deal. They even had family members present. I cant wait to see them perform again. Check them out for yourselves at their site: myspace.com/blackroseschicago

The hothead above ripping on Phyllis' owner Clem Jascot is entitled to his opinion, but I have been in the music business for thirty years and Clem is one of the few club owners who has treated me with respect. Phyllis' is all about the music and the eclectic variety that Chicago offers and the beauty of Phyllis' is that it is not locked into any one genre. I have played this club in the 80's and continue to perform there today. It is a place I always feel welcome and have always been treated well. As far as not paying bands, that is total bullshit. The bands play for the door which is more than fair and quite common in the world if live performance. The band sets their own cover charge and on a good night you make some money. Phyllis' musical Inn may not be Carnegie hall, but it is an interesting historic local club, was one of the first music clubs in the area before it went yuppie, and has not changed one bit, and for that I am glad.

Here's the deal on Phyllis'. There are a couple of nice bar tenders and the drinks are a little cheaper than the yuppie joints in that neighborhood but BEWARE, the owner is a raging *ssh*le! A total manic depressive alcoholic. If he's in a good mood he'll buy drinks and be giant drunken toddler but look out. If he's really cranky, he'll call last call at 11PM and lock the door. He treats his staff just a bad as he does the customers and he only books amature bands who play for free and often can't play a whole sets worth of music. What a F***ing dump. Every once in a while when the owner is out of town, the place can be really fun.

PMI was home to Rollercoaster in the 90's.

This place sounds AWFUL. The owner is a rageaholic who needs some serious help. Bands, do not ever play here, it is a really poor sound and people, even people in a new band that needs a gig, do not deserve to be treated like misbehaving children.

I was a regular at Phyllis' way back in the day (read: early to mid 90s) when I was a graduate student in Chicago. There was one band there, and its name was ??? They were fabulous, though I am having trouble just now recalling just what was ineffably wonderful about them. Can anybody help me? This, again was early 90s and they played often, and the place went crazy.

I stumbled in this holy establishment last night for a drink and was treated to a buffett of mystical delights. The aging hippie band "Dada Dog" was making hellacious noises on the deep set stage, and the clientele was dressed in everything from janitor's jump suits to garbage bag skirts and hats with Donnie Darko style bunny ears. This will certainly become a frequent stop for me while en route to the Gold Star. I am new to the city and felt comfortable among these beautiful freaks. A report that a posting of "Boobs R Kool" scrawled on the men's room wall also made me quite pleased.

Beware of the huge steps down into their dark beer garden! There is no lighting (other than street lighting) and I broke my ankle BEFORE I even started drinking!

I've had the pleasure of playing there on several occasions. My band (Moses Gun) could empty out the joint with the best of 'em.A great entry level club for fledgling rock bands.
"Billy Corgan blows dogs for wine change" is STILL on the men's room wall.
