I'm sick of people giving the following useless review for bars & restaurants: 'the service was terrible, i mean, they didn't even say hi to us, so then we eventually left before trying anything, and will never go back again.' This isn't a review of the place, it's a review of you. I'm sorry, but if the place was quiet and empty, and you couldn't get the waiter's attention, I'm going to blame YOU. You are happy when you are unhappy, and you look for excuses to be unhappy. I've been to the Local Option about 10 times in the past year, and have never had this experience. Rather, I have had quite the opposite experience, and this opinion is based on REAL experience. The food, albeit slightly pricey for a bar, is very good and refreshingly unique from the standard bar fare. But for me, it's about the beer. This place not only has a large selection of imports and domestic microbrews on tap (20+), but they are rotated frequently, ensuring freshness. Every time I'm there, there are about five beers that would crack most beer geeks' "top 50."

i'm sorry, but this place is a joke. If you can bear through the staff and poor service, then the food might be worth it. I went there yesterday with my girlfriend, and I kid you not, we had 3 interactions with our waiter (including ordering our dinner) and he never once said a single word to us -- not even a hello. Mind you this was a Monday afternoon and the place was empty. Fine. We've been here before and were sort of expecting this kind of service.
It just so happens that we were sitting next to the area where they pick up the food. After about 15 minutes we noticed that our ticket was still sitting in the window. My girlfriend gets up and looks in the kitchen ... not a single person in sight. At this point we are brewing at the table. We try to make gestures to our deaf-mute, burn-out-of-a-waiter but he doesn't have the wherewithal to pick up on our cues. We finally decided that we had about enough and decide to leave. We casually got up, put on our coats, walked right past deaf-mute and the 2 other staffers doing nothing at the bar, and walked out the front door. When we got to my car which was parked across the street we proceed to watch all three of the employees run out to the sidewalk and look around for us. It was the exact scene from Dumb & Dumber. So at least my girlfriend got a good chuckle out of the experience. I have now vowed never to go back to Local Option. I don't care how good the food is.

I AM OBSSESSED WITH THE PLACE!!! I am a seafood lover and have yet to try one thing here that I don't love. My favorite are the crab cakes--hands down the best ever...and I've tried a lot. Second is the pan fried catfish. Even the burgers are great. But you CANNOT go to this place without trying their fries. Best in the city!!! I don't think its expensive at all--very reasonable.

The old cool vibe is gone...its now another place for the McGhees spillover. Those born pre 1980 especially need to take note (its become a yuppy/frat place). If you were born 1980-1985, this is your new cool place to hang...even better if you like darts where the mural used to be. Imagination is lost, its all about making a buck at this place...so cater to the kids while the new owners make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

This used to be a great place--unique murals, lots of wood, fairly low-key and great food. In short, one of the very few decent places in Lincoln Park for the non-frat crowd. However, after some crazy renovation, it currently has absolutely zero character--food is still good (and a bit more expensive), but the Local Option is no more. Bring back the old red cushion booths, murals and wood!

If your looking for a hidden gem for food and drinks..the "Local" is your place. Once known as biker bar in the 80's, "Local" is one the Chicago's DePaul area's best bars. After merging with "The Local Shack", the place has changed from slider and bar pizzas to New Orleans Cajun food. I suggest trying one of their huge salads, Po' Boys, or the spicy chicken wings.
The pulse of the "Local" is bartender, Aldon Patt, who has worked there since the place opened 18 years ago. If you looking for a bartender that can adapt to his clientele, Aldon is your guy. He's one of Chicago's best bartenders and I would suggest to all aspiring actors, currently are working in the service industry, to stop in and watch him work.

Relaxed, friendly atmosphere - great kitchen (NOT bar food - try the po' boys) - Lincoln Park's pug bar
