I have been going to this cozy and sophisticated club on Irving for just about a year now. Katerina makes absolutely scintillating food (and a great Martini too!!). Lately she has been featuring vocalists and strings. I was pleasantly surprised on the first Wednesday of December by a new jazz-mediteranean trio called "Guitars of Fire": TOP NOTCH, technical and soulful. They sound like six musicians with tight arrangements, mesmerizing soloing and a fine polish to the music. Definitely a group to watch as they return every month to share the stage with Guitarra Azul (another phenomeon: The Steve Edwards Orchestra). I was able to buy their demo which will soon be replaced by a formal releaase. The leader of the group directed me to myspace (followed by guitarsoffire). Check it out. I also adore the gypsy sound of Alfonso Ponticelli and have been out to see the exotic beauty of the Ivanonic-Kapsalis duo. Superb stringwork all around.

part 2 I could simply go on and on, but let me conclude by saying I have been through about 98% of the menu. There is not one dish that I would not describe as at least very good ,so order what you like without the slightest worry. As a nightclub, Katerina's offers an intimate, warm, cozy, candlelit atmosphere that allows you ,if you choose ,to sit close enough to make you feel you were being entertained in your own living room. And what entertainment you can expect! Guitarist Alfonso Ponticelli, singers Grazyna Auguscik and Spider Saloff are Katerina's regulars and genuine world stars. If you don't already know those names, Google them and see.for yourself. Singer/pianist Judy Roberts is a Chicago jazz legend, while some of my personal favorites Guitarra Azul (neo flamenco)and Rio Bamba (Bossa Nova and Samba)and jazz singer Amanda Crumley are fast rising "ones to watch".These are just a few.

Part one Katerina's is an outright treasure that should be front and center in every travel and guide book about Chicago ! Without the slightest doubt in my mind the best combination of restaurant and nightclub this city has to offer. If you just chose to examine Katerina's just as a restaurant, I think the food would stand up to the best in the city. The grilled calamari (both styles) and the souvlaki are the best I have ever eaten anywhere. Though meatballs would seem on the surface a simple dish,I have been disappointed by Italian icons like Gene and Georgetti's and the Italian Village but not Katerinas. Just want a snack? The delicious Skorthalia,a creamy garlic dip served with crusty bread, will excite your taste buds, cure your cold, and end that evening's smooching all at the same time.

What a great bar! The ambience is sensual, along with the food. The tiropitakia are to die for. When you bite into one, your teeth sink into the soft cheese filling, and then the amoretto topping slowly follows and leaves you with a lovely lingering after taste. It makes you want to.......well...... lick the plate- but that just wouldn't look good while holding Katerinas very own martini creation. It's a shimmering crimson color "sour cherry" martini. Holding one of those babys makes you want relax into the sexy decor and feel elegant. If you must lick the plate however, (and I have come close), the clientel is great and you just can't help feeling comfortable no matter what. I highly recommend it. Oh and did I mention the music? Check out the line up!

to talk about katerina's you have to ask "which katerina's?" because it is a real cross-rhodes of many different musical scenes and styles. there is blues and jazz delivered by many pros who perform all around chicago and come here for the fun of intimate shows in a cozy spot. my favorite i think are the gypsy guitar nights. they suit the mood and acoustics the best. P.S. the kitchen is open late and the food is savory and satisfying. great eggplant recently and the asperegus wrapped in prociutto with a balsamic dressing is fresh in all senses of the term. and finally it is an amazing conversation bar. you can talk to such a range of folks and your host wants to know you too. very personal and interesting place.

Amazing music, good drinks, great food, and some of the best, friendliest service I've encountered in the Chicagoland area. Did I mention the music?

Katerina's is can certainly no longer be considered a coffeehouse.. at least I've never seen a coffee place that doesn't open until 11am and boasts the 'best bloody mary'... which is too bad, the area could have used a good neighborhood cafe again.

Katerina secretly wanted to own a cabaret, but couldn't get a liquor license and settled for a cafe. Be warned... on music nights you may walk through the door and find yourself subject to a 2-drink minimum. That's 2 "coffee" drinks... not for the faint of heart.
